Soccer Clinic & Lecture with former Manchester United Staff Members

The Sonoma County Soccer Academy is excited to host world-class clinicians Mike Phelan, Paul McGuinness, and David Horrocks for a soccer clinic and lecture on August 2-3, 2024. The event will conclude with watching Manchester United vs Liverpool Football Club (T.V.).

Soccer Clinic #1

August 2, 2024 (Friday)

Time: 5:00 PM-8:00 PM

Ages: 2015, 2014, 2013 (boys & girls)

Location: Cardinal Newman High School

4320 Old Redwood Hwy, Santa Rosa Ca 95403

Cost: $100 (limited to 50 players)

Description: The three-hour clinic will be directed by former Manchester United Staff members: Mike Phelan, Paul McGuinness, and David Horrocks. The clinic is geared towards competitive soccer players that are serious about the game. Included in the price is a Sonoma County Soccer Academy training jersey & the classroom lecture on August 3, 2024.

Description: Mike Phelan, Paul McGuinness and David Horrocks have worked with some of the top soccer players in the world. Come learn from world-class educators on what it takes to make it to the top of world football. The lecture is free to all participants from the soccer clinic. The $10 fee is for anybody (parents, fans, players, etc...) that did not attend the clinic. We will need everybody to pre-register, so we know the capacity for the event.

Description: Mike Phelan & Paul McGuinness will give a pre-game, half-time, and post game talk/analysis of the game.

Mike Phelan

Mike Phelan has won almost every honor in the game and is unique to have achieved this across multiple roles as a Player, a Coach, an Assistant Manager, and a Manager. A multiple Premier League winner, Champions League winner and three times Champions League finalist and an FA Cup winner, a Football League Cup winner, Charity Shield winner, World Club Trophy winner and Manager of The Month winner.

Throughout his career Phelan has tested himself against the best over many years including Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti, Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Jose Mourinho as a coach not to mention many of their formidable players such as Lionel Messi and Zinedine Zidane on the field of play.

Mike himself has also had the pleasure of coaching a multitude of past and present footballing royalty: Andrew Robertson, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Marcus Rashford and Jarrod Bowen to name a handful. Mike was the trusted assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson over many years at the height of Manchester United’s footballing domination.

However, Mike Phelans’ knowledge and experience doesn’t just stop there. He is a coaching practitioner of extreme growth mindset with a serious interest in leadership, coaching and elite performance. In his continual quest for betterment Phelan has engaged with organizations such as Westpoint Military Academy, Sandhurst, Nike, Wall Street Financiers, Cadent Gas, and NASA to name but a few and he also currently works as a consultant and advisor to companies from various sectors such as Findel Education, Veo Technologies, Carleton University Canada (Sprott Business School) and Inspire Sports.

A true leader, a seasoned coach, and a vastly experienced mentor and educator with exceptional achievements and outcomes through a distinguished career at the very pinnacle of World and European football.

Paul McGuinness

Paul is both an A and Pro Licence coach and a respected academic with a degree in Physical Education and Sport Science from Loughborough University. McGuinness spent a total of 23 years at Manchester United as head and director of the world’s most successful academy, helping to move a number of players through the set up and into first-team football at the club, Marcus Rashford, Jonny Evans, Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard to name but a few. Paul has also held positions as a national coach developer with the English Football Association and head of youth at Leicester City Football Club.

With towards 30 years of practical, lived, theoretical and senior leadership experience Paul is one of the most knowledgeable people regarding the talent development process in world football. Paul’s seminars and coaching clinics attract solid and consistent audiences across the globe and his wealth of knowledge is an endless and priceless source for the future development of the game. Paul works with many F.A.’s, governing bodies and clubs both at home in the UK and Internationally.

McGuinness has seen many players on the pathway from fresh eyed 8-year-old right through to the world's biggest stages and most high-pressured games and environments. If anyone knows how to educate footballers through the ages and how to deliver a coaching programme of the highest quality, then Paul McGuinness is your man.

David Horrocks

David is an educational and sports specialist and another former member of the world class support team at Manchester United Football Club as their research and development officer. His responsibility and specialisms are best practice, best in class operations and high performing cultures across areas such as technology, the coaching process, performance analytics, science, psychology, and the efficient use of data inmodern sports business operations.

Over the years David has engaged with many successful and world class organizations such as British Cycling, Borussia Dortmund, The DFB, Milwaukee Bucks, Cricket Australia, London School of Contemporary Dance, Red Bull, AMG Mercedes, U.K. Military leaders, The FA Premier League, The League Managers Association and Inter Miami among others. David is also a consultant to Findel Education, Veo Technologies, Carleton University Canada (Sprott Business School) and Inspire Sports and is currently running an employee health and wellbeing program for up to 6000 workers with Cadent Gas in conjunction with Whoop technologies.

The early part of David's career was spent in the corporate and government services world in technology with manufacturers such as Cisco, Avaya and Samsung operating in Police, Banking, NHS, and Local Government. David is also a published scientist with peer reviewed papers in The International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching, The Psychologist, and The British Psychological Society Journal on the topics of elite level football coaching, serial winning teams, serial winning individuals and the cognitive processes of elite footballers. A vastly experienced educator and an active coach himself working with younger aged footballers in both boys' and girls' football and as an advisor on the multi-disciplinary environment to many industries, coaches, managers and support team practitioners.
